Sion's Priorities

Protecting and Expanding Access to Healthcare

As a physician at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and a dedicated public servant, Dr. Sion Roy has seen firsthand the challenges families face in accessing quality healthcare. In the State Senate, he will fight to expand affordable healthcare access, protect reproductive rights, and ensure that every Californian—regardless of income or background—receives the care they deserve.

Dr. Roy was President of the Los Angeles County Medical Association during the COVID pandemic, guiding our county and state leaders in their response to the crisis, ensuring policies were based on good science and data. In the State Senate, Dr. Roy will be one the few medical professionals in the legislature. His knowledge of the science and systems of healthcare will be pivotal as we navigate a time where healthcare is under attack.

By investing in community clinics, strengthening Medi-Cal and the social safety-net, and supporting frontline healthcare workers, Dr. Roy will work to build a healthier, more equitable California.

Standing up for Workers and Small Business

Dr. Sion Roy understands that our workforce and small businesses are the backbone of our local economy and that working families deserve real opportunities to thrive. With his deep commitment to education and career development, he will champion policies that:

  • Protect good-paying jobs so people can afford to both live and work in their communities.
  • Provide small business owners with the resources they need to grow by cutting red tape and expanding access to capital.
  • Prioritize workforce training programs through the community college system.
  • Champion housing on community college campuses to help unhoused students find safe, affordable places to live.

Dr. Roy has been a steadfast ally to workers and organized labor, even representing his own union, UAPD Local 206, at the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor. He understands that beyond simply raising wages, workers thrive when they have protections, and that includes legislators who have their back.

The truth is, it’s getting harder and harder to make ends meet in LA. Basic necessities like groceries, gas, and housing are more expensive than ever, and wages have not kept up. Dr. Sion Roy will work to contain these costs, expand business opportunities, and support and protect workers.

CHAMPIONING ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTIONS and FIRE RECOVERY

Climate change is already impacting the Westside and South Bay, bringing more frequent wildfires, rising sea levels, and worsening air quality. That’s why Dr. Roy supports strong environmental protections to maintain California’s place at the global forefront of the fight against climate change. The devastating January Palisades Fire alone cost hundreds of homes– including that of Dr. Roy and his family– and it cost many more their livelihood. And these severe weather events will only grow more frequent. Dr. Roy will push for achieving California’s clean energy goals by investing in wind, solar, and other non-polluting energy sources, and work to bring down the cost of alternative energies for homeowners. He will marshal state resources to address fire mitigation, and Dr. Roy will work to bring down the cost of fire-safe rebuilding materials, so our community can come back stronger than before.

Dr. Sion Roy also understands the lack of accessible green space in our district. Parks and urban canopies not only provide much needed shelter from the heat and reduce temperatures, but they help filter pollutants from the air. Dr. Roy will advocate for more parks and green space, like the new Great Park which will replace the Santa Monica Airport.

By taking decisive action now, we can protect Los Angeles County’s environment, economy, and quality of life for generations to come.
